Carry On Harry Potter in London!
Before coming on tour with us, why don't you check out some of the fantastic scenes around London
first... let's call it homework shall we?
For your self guided London Harry Potter tour, you'll need to be prepared... naturally your spell book will need to come along as well as your owl/cat or rat (please don't take one of the rats from the London Underground, they are not trained in the special arts of wizardry and witchcraft and above all, they have families of their own in the tunnels. You'll need a wand and a mode of transport. Now as the muggles in London are not used to seeing enchanted cars/bikes/shoe horns or other common wizard ways of getting around, you may need to stick to the underground.
Are we all ready? Then let's begin...
First things first, let's see...the best place to start is probably, hmmm, yes, well the best place to start as a wizard is of course...Diagon Alley
So let's take the tube to 'Monument' on the Circle and District line. Turn right up Gracechurch street and you'll come across Leadenhall market on the right hand side - Be careful you don't miss it, many muggles just pass it by. This is the site of the dark and mysterious Leaky Cauldron Inn that leads into Diagon Alley |
| Empty shots of Diagon Alley itself were also shot here. |
OK, so now that we are in Diagon Alley (you did count the stones correctly didn't you?), we need to go and find a bank if we're to buy stuff for Hogwarts |
| Right then, next stop is Gringotts so we'll need to make our way there - what's that? you say you forgot your flue powder? Oh well, we'd better use muggle transport again then...get back on the tube and take the circle or district line to Temple - unless you want to walk of course, there's plenty to see on the way! |
Well, are you here? Good, now you'll need to walk up Arundel street (off Temple place) to the Strand. Right on the corner there you should be able to see Australia House - or at least that's what these strange Muggles folk call it, round our way, we call it 'Gringott's' have a look in the window, can you see any Goblin gold? |
| Next stop, the train station, hurry along now, we don't want to miss the Hogwarts Express do we? Either walk up Kingsway to Euston Road or jump back on the tube to King's Cross. |
Now, here in King's Cross station, this is where it gets a little confusing...you see the platform we want, platform 9 and three quarters, well, there's a sign there for it, right there, see it between platforms 9 and 10, but in the films, it was actually platform 4 that you could see...as for the station itself, well, that's our next stop, you see the front of the station is actually filmed at St. Pancras just next door, we've still got some time before our train leaves for Hogwarts, shall we check it out? |
| St. Pancras is just outside, right next door, recognise that? Now this is where it gets even trickier... Did you ever think that the platform at King's Cross in the films wasn't quite what you had in mind when you read the book? That's because JK Rowling actually envisioned Euston station when she was writing the books. Well, seeing as we're so close, we may as well pop along there and have a look eh? |
Come out of St. Pancras, walk back along Euston road to Eversholt and there it is - Euston Station - now see platforms 9 and 10 here - is that what you had in mind? Thought so! |
| Right, I think as we're so close, we should just nip along and see the reptile house where Harry first realised he could speak parceltongue. |
Carry on walking along Euston road until you get to Regent's Park, take a stroll across - it's a lovely day! Up there in the northern corner, that's London Zoo, well actually it's Little Whinging Zoo, there used to be a lovely big Boa Constrictor in there, escaped one day though, some fat kid got stuck inside it's cage somehow, it's a mystery... |
Right now, are you ready for the real adventure? Then return to the Harry Potter page or ...
