Lake District
In
keeping with the theme of dramatic scenery and stunning
beauty, England’s Lake District has to be one of the
most spectacular examples of what else the UK has to offer.
With 16 lakes and 12 smaller ‘tarns’ the Lake
District has no shortage of things to see and do.
Boat trips, water sports and the history of some of the
most spectacular events in world history abound here, including
the breaking of the world water speed record by Donald Campbell
who tragically died here on Lake Coniston in 1967.
Lake Windermere, England’s largest natural lake, is
the perfect spot to sit back and soak up the atmosphere
of Cumbria’s rolling hills and lakeside life and the
cross lake ferries and steamers give a hint of real old
English charm.
The area has always been a site of celebrated beauty, indeed
William Wordsworth gave tribute in his poem, ‘the
daffodils’.
Cumbria has a lot more to it than just water though, and
another of the UK’s largest stone circles is located
near here. Set high amongst the Pennines, Castlerigg stone
circle, at 30m in diameter is larger than Stonehenge itself
and believed to date back as far as 3000BC! The setting
is truly spectacular, our very own Macchu Picchu!
