| The
Standing Stones of Avebury
Avebury’s
uniqueness lies in the fact that the village of Avebury
lies partly within the Henge, or outer circle of stones.
A small village road splits the stones. Roughly quarter
of a mile across, the outer circle of stones encloses two
smaller stone circles and the beauty of this incredible
ancient structure is its accessibility. Guests to Avebury
are freely allowed to wander amongst the stones, touching
them, meditating with them, performing modern day druidic
rituals, feeling their power.
The
stones stand today as they stood over 5000 years ago when
they were first constructed. Like Stonehenge, many theories
abound as to the reason for their construction.

The
layout of Avebury is slightly different to Stonehenge and
indeed it is much bigger, but like Stonehenge, the stones
are placed on ley lines and have very strong connections
with the equinox and the alignment of stars and planets.
Avebury
is surrounded by other fascinating remnants and glimpses
into the past of prehistoric Britain. The bizarre and curious
conical man made mound of Silbury hill is nearby as is West
Kennet Long Barrow, one of the best preserved specimens
of ancient burial mounds, the avenue of stones leads up
to the Stone circle and there are numerous other mysterious
monuments and constructions in the local area.
